Before a snowmobile may be operated in Pennsylvania, the vehicle and its rider must have the required equipment.
The braking system may be operated by hand or foot and must be capable of either:
- Bringing the snowmobile to a stop, under normal conditions, within 40 feet when traveling at a speed of 20 miles per hour on hard packed snow or...
- Locking the snowmobile's traction belt(s).
The muffler must be in good working condition, be in constant operation, and meet applicable sound-level standards.
- The engine noise produced by a snowmobile shall not exceed 82 dbA (decibels).
- It is unlawful to modify a muffler to create more noise.
