Passenger riding on back of a snowmobile

Carrying a passenger involves special skills. As your basic riding skills progress, practice these skills.

  • Carry a passenger only if your snowmobile is designed to; most are not.
  • Ask passengers to stay seated so that they maintain the lowest center of gravity possible. By standing, they can affect your ability to maneuver the machine.
  • Warn passengers about extending their arms and legs outside the machine where they may collide with branches or bushes.
  • When crossing a road, check for challenging environmental and traffic conditions such as low light, limited visibility, heavy traffic, or wide roadways. Snowmobile operators must evaluate each situation to determine the safest way to cross the road. Sometimes it may be safer for the passenger to dismount and walk across; at other times, it may be safer for the passenger to stay on the snowmobile.
