Course Outline

No person under 10 years of age may operate a snowmobile unless the snowmobile is designed as a toy and used only on private property.

Persons 10 and 11 years of age may operate a snowmobile only if they are accompanied on the snowmobile by a parent, a guardian, or a person who is at least 16 years of age and designated by the parent or guardian.

Persons 12 to 15 years of age may operate a snowmobile only if they:

  • Are accompanied on the snowmobile by a parent, a guardian, or a person who is at least 16 years of age and designated by the parent or guardian or...
  • Have a snowmobile Safety Certificate issued by the IDNR that authorizes them to operate a snowmobile.

No one may operate a snowmobile on a highway unless he or she:

  • Has a valid motor vehicle driver's license or a snowmobile Safety Certificate issued by the IDNR or...
  • Is under 16 years of age and is under the immediate supervision of a parent, a guardian, or a person who is at least 18 years of age and designated by the parent or guardian.
