According to Minnesota law, a snowmobile is a self-propelled vehicle that:

  • Was originally manufactured and designed for travel on snow or ice and…
  • Is steered by skis or runners.

In Minnesota, snowmobiles do not include any of these vehicles that have been equipped with aftermarket skis and tracks:

  • All-terrain vehicles (ATVs)
  • Off-highway motorcycles (OHMs)
  • Off-road vehicles (ORVs)
  • Mini-trucks
  • Utility task vehicles (UTVs)
  • Any other vehicles being operated off-road
