Special Events

The Department of Natural Resources may authorize the holding of organized special events (see “special event” definition) within the state. The department shall adopt rules relating to the conduct of special events held under department permits, designating the equipment and facilities necessary for safe operation of snowmobiles and for the safety of operators, participants, and observers.

Snowmobiles that are operated only in department-authorized special events must be registered in the same manner as other snowmobiles. Machines registered in this manner are exempt from the light, brake, and muffler requirements.

An application must be filed with the department at least 30 days before the scheduled date of a special event. Applications may be obtained from the Conservation Officers or the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, Wallace State Office Building, Des Moines, Iowa 50319-0034, 515-281-3449.
