It's the Law—Age Restrictions for Snowmobile Operation
There are no age restrictions for operating a snowmobile on private property. However, the following age restrictions apply to operating a snowmobile on public land or ice, or on land purchased with snowmobile registration funds in Iowa.
- Under 12 years of age: May not operate unless accompanied by a responsible person riding on the same snowmobile and who is at least eighteen years of age or older, is experienced in snowmobile operation, and has a valid motor vehicle license or snowmobile safety certificate.
- 12 to 15 years of age: Must have a valid safety certificate and be under the direct supervision of a parent, guardian, or other adult authorized by the parent or guardian, who is experienced in snowmobile operation, and has a valid motor vehicle license or snowmobile safety certificate.
- 16 to 17 years of age: May operate unsupervised, but must have a valid snowmobile safety certificate.
- Persons 18 or older: May operate without a snowmobile safety certificate.
